This disc features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; some might argue that this is overkill, though Maria Elena is right to say that Buddy Holly was experimenting with 'silky smooth orchestration'. Not, I suspect to the schmalzy degree seen here, and certainly not on those simple, clean up-tempo numbers, such as Peggy Sue. The chances that he'd ever rerecord that or, say, Maybe Baby as orchestral songs are simply unconvincing.
For all that, where it works, it works. Well worth a listen.
